Chapter 9

Valentina

Our breakfast table was growing a bit more crowded. I made it there first this morning, beelining for June and Rebel both of them watching me with expectant gazes. You know, they were usually fucking weird but they seemed exceptionally odd today. A breeze blew in from three windows that were left open and I inhaled, tasting the storm that was rolling in. How odd. We literally had never had a storm here.

I hadn’t seen either of my friends since the day I went MIA for a few hours. At first, I thought it was just chance and that the guys had mentioned to them that I would be laying low the next day, but I’d asked…. And they’d said nothing. It wasn’t like June or Rebel to not comment on my absence.

I called both of them my best friends but the scope of that term was limited. They were my best female friends, but when I really considered it, I knew very little about them and I am sorry, but right now? I was feeling a little suspicious of both of them. So here I was, bright and fucking early, dressed to feel a bit more like a badass than usual. My hair was tugged up into two buns and I wore a pair of black pants that sat low on my hips with boots and an inmate standard top that I had cropped so that it was a bit more bearable.

“Val,” June leaned forward “how are you feeling?”

I arched a brow sitting and facing them directly, “Well besides losing a fucking day worth of memory, ending up in a tub of red goo, and then getting pushed off a roof? Pretty good.”

Now normally, both of them would breeze past my sarcasm or laugh, mostly because it felt like the two of them were functioning between being high and psychotic. Today though? They looked stone cold sober and were watching me as if waiting for something I didn’t understand. It scared the shit out of me.

Both of them stared blankly at me and then Rebel spoke, “How is your magic feeling?”

“I have no idea what you are asking,” I pointed out and decide to flip the questioning, “did either of you follow me back to my room when I went missing?”

Blank stares once again. I leaned forward on the wood surface, “You know something, don’t you?” Betrayal hit me hard and I felt something darker than before building inside of me, growing and rolling to make itself into a chaotic dangerous weapon.

“You weren’t in danger,” June whispered as anger had the table under me searing. Both girls stood up and backed away slightly. I could feel my body tensing, wanting to lunge forward and I nearly did until two muscular arms wrapped around me and the scent of cool mountain wind and pine had my pulse slowing.

Both girls ran away and I snapped my head up to find West watching them with a narrowed eye before moving his gaze towards me.
